New Orleans- The French Quarter and the Unforgiving Heat

Food Travel Travel With Kids

We made it to New Orleans! And oh boy was it hot.  It was around 95 degrees the whole time.  But we got to see some amazing places, eat some amazing food, and have quality hang out time with a good friend.

Check out our Youtube video below:

We stayed at The French Quarter RV Resort for two days.  This was by far the nicest RV park I’ve ever seen.  It was surrounded by a tall block fence and was gated, they also had a security guard at night.  Each RV spot was paved, level, and had full hook ups including cable that was not very good at all.  There was grass between each spot and some spots had private screened in gazebos.  The office was really nice, there was an indoor lounge area, an outdoor courtyard with a tv, bar area (no drinks were stocked, it was just a place to sit), some tables with umbrellas, and a really nice pool and hot tub. There were four individual bathrooms with showers and a laundry room- all were kept very clean.  Our only complaint was the WiFi, which was not broadcast out to the RVs (although I was able to get a weak signal on my laptop from the RV).  Even in the courtyard and in the lounge, the WiFi wasn’t very fast.  As you can imagine, this place was pretty expensive- so just so you don’t suffer from sticker shock like we did, it was $150/night.

The highlights of our trip were eating at The Gumbo Pot, trying beignets for the first time, wandering around City Park, and seeing all the historic buildings.

Heading to the French Quarter with Jimmy

The first night we ate at The Gumbo Pot.  The food was excellent!  We ordered several dishes and shared them all including bbq shrimp appetizer, fried calamari (which we got the kids to eat by calling them “round French fries” all night LOL!), red beans and rice, jambalaya, shrimp po boy, and boudin balls. For dessert we tried the bread pudding, chocolate mousse cake, and bananas foster.  Eating in this “family style” let us enjoy a little of everything.  We had an amazing night just eating, laughing, and catching up with our old friend.

The next day we went to City Park where there was a pond with a path around it, a playground, a sculpture garden, and Morning Call Coffee Stand for our very first beignets for breakfast.  I would recommend City Park to anyone visiting New Orleans, but especially for families with children.  Then we hung out at the RV park’s pool and ordered Magazine Pizza for lunch.  The pizza was really good, but what made it AMAZING was the dipping sauce.  It was some sort of buttermilk, garlic, dill dressing type stuff that will knock your socks off!  And then we headed out for the evening to walk around and explore the city.  We walked along the waterfront, saw the St. Louis Cathedral, and popped into Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop- which is the oldest pub in the city (and maybe the country- I don’t know, but that’s something I heard).

New Orleans is not the most family friendly place to vacation, but as long as you know where to go and where to avoid, it can still be a pretty neat trip.  We were lucky to have a local guiding us all weekend.

Next stop is Pensacola, Florida to relax on the beach for a couple days before doing a full day drive up to see my family in Georgia.

Have you ever vacationed in New Orleans?  What was your favorite part of the visit?  What was your least favorite part?  Any tips for other travelers?
