This has never rung more true for our family than now. We made it back up to the Central Atlantic region and Stu’s parent’s house. And our laptops automatically connected to the internet- What a relief after weeks of spotty cell phone service and even spottier WiFi! We only spent a few days with Stu’s parents and only a few days with my (Katherine’s) parents before we headed out for the “northern” part of our trip. It was a great time of relaxing family time. We sat around the living room for a while, I took the boys to the pool, we had great meals, and great internet speed- which meant I got to catch up on everything I needed to do for the website.
Check out our video below to see what shenanigans we’ve been up to this week:
On the way out of Virginia, we stopped by George Washington’s birthplace in Colonial Beach, VA. It’s a national park and the admission and parking is absolutely free! There was even easy, pull through RV parking. The site is nearly completely outdoors, with several trails to walk, grass fields leading right up to the creek, farm animals to check out, a small visitor’s center, and a reconstructed house. Turns out, it’s not the original (which burned down toward the end of the 1700s), and it’s not even similar to the house where Washington is born. They made a mistake and built the house in the early 20th century based on the wrong foundation….weird. But they still give tours of it (that’s the only time you can enter the building) and the park ranger gives a “rich” history of the entire Washington family- from George Washington’s great-grandfather who was the original owner, all the way up to George Washington’s niece. It’s a really cool place for the whole family.
There is so much more to see in the Northern Neck of Virginia, but since we’ve visited the area so many times, we just stayed at Stu’s parent’s house to relax instead of sight-seeing. We’ll certainly be back to this area and will post more that we do there. In the meantime- just know that there is SO much to do in Colonial Beach and surrounding towns- it is worth a trip! There are antique shops, boutiques, great restaurants, and a cute boardwalk.
Next stop was my parent’s house! There we were able to catch up on a few projects around the RV, I caught up on more laundry (which is a never-ending battle and expense while in the RV), and I got to clean out the RV really well.
Southern Maryland is another area that is packed full of amazing places to see and things to do. From Point Lookout State Park with its lighthouse and beaches, to Historic St. Mary’s City with the beautiful river side landscape and recreated colonial buildings, and the Solomons Island boardwalk with amazing seafood restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques, this is another hidden gem that would make a great vacation spot.
I also made my super awesome pancakes for breakfast while we were in Maryland, using the Praline Maple Syrup we got from the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in Florida (you can learn more about our visit there in this post). You can also make my super awesome RV pancakes with the recipe below:

We’ll be heading up North next! And possibly be getting a dolly to tow my car along with us. This will really help us out while traveling- It will make our trips into cities much easier and cheaper (no more rentals or taxi rides for us!). We’ll be sure to upload a video and post about that once we figure all that out.
Any advice for getting a dolly or towing a car? We’ve been doing a lot of research on it for months now, but we welcome any advice from experienced RVers!
